What I love about this activity is that it's so easy to make and can keep kids entertained for hours when they "race" their caterpillars to see which can go the fastest. I especially like that kids can help make this themselves.
Supplies
- Construction paper, cut into 1-1/2 inch strips
- Safety scissors
- A straw
- Colored pencils, crayons, or markers
Directions
- Fan fold a strip of construction, paper back and forth like an accordion.
- While the paper is folded, cut the corners off so the unfolded sides look like half-circles.
- Carefully open the paper flat.
- Draw a face on one end of the caterpillar. You can decorate the rest of your caterpillar with spots, stripes, or anything else you like!
- Place your caterpillar on a table.
- Place the end of your straw behind the caterpillar and blow gently.
- Watch your caterpillar wiggle and crawl!
- Having fun racing your caterpillar with another child or grown-up!
